A Walk to Remember

TRAVERSE THE MARA CONSERVANCIES ON FOOT

Samburu | Masai Mara

A unique opportunity to join our Kenya head guide, Roelof Schutte, on a walking expedition across the Mara conservancies from east to northwest, starting in the Mara Naboisho Conservancy and journeying on foot through Mara North, Lemek and Ol Chorro Conservancy. This is a conservation journey across the Mara, spending time at wildlife conservation and community projects along the way, including the Maa Trust, Mara Predator Programme and the Mara Elephant Project. Adventurers will experience far more than a walking safari, leaving with a deep understanding of the work that goes into protecting and supporting the communities as well as wildlife in this region. You’ll be walking between 15 and 20 kilometres per day, so this itinerary is not for the faint-hearted and requires a good level of fitness. You’ll stay in a mix of fly camps, permanent camps, and safari houses, with all of the logistics taken care of so you can focus on the varied landscapeas you explore the greater Masai Mara on foot. As well as covering significant distances each day, you’ll take the time to explore, identify wildlife tracks, check out the birdlife and plant life you encounter along the way, and at times approach big game, all under the guidance of your expert walking guide, Roelof. You will need to carry your own daypack which will include packed lunches, snacks, and three litres of drinking water, while your main bags will be transported from point to point by our logistics team

FLY CAMP FACILITIES:

Canvas dome tent with bedrolls, proper duvets and pillows — twin share. There’s a shower tent with bucket shower, toilet tent, as well as a basin with a jug of water for washing hands/face. Towels and bedding are provided. Mess tent provide shelter in case of rain, but meals are served outdoors wherever possible. Guests will leave main luggage at Naboisho Camp, and we will transport overnight bags to the fly camp so, guests only need to carry a small daypack.

Please note: unlike a single night of fly camping, where tents are kept at Naboisho for example as a backup, there are no backup accommodation options for nights two, three and four when you are fly camping, and also no option to do game drives on this safari once the walking safari commences. In the event of injury, we will, of course, look for alternative accommodation or evacuate to a hospital if needed, but otherwise, once you have started the expedition, you need to have the fitness required to continue until you reach the Mara Bush Houses on day five. We recommend doing some long practise walks with a heavy fully kitted daypack (with full three litre hydration pack, snacks and personal amenities sunscreen and waterproof items) to help prepare you for this adventure, and make sure you are able to fully enjoy the experience

INCLUDED:

One night at Naboisho on game package basis on the first night, one night at Mara or Acacia House on the fifth night, airstrip transfers at the start from Ol Seki Airstrip to Naboisho, and at the end from Mara Bush Houses to Mara North Airstrip. Asilia Safari Fundi, Roelof, for duration of the walking safari (morning of day 2 to departure end of day 5), three nights fly camping, full board basis throughout (all meals and house drinks — soft drinks, local spirits, beers, house wines), full logistics set-up for fly camp and all relevant conservancy fees for the duration of the expedition, Asilia conservation charge, and Emergency Support Cover.
